System Design Document - I'm Hungry
The first system I was inspired by was how I become fatter when I binge eat sweet foods on my hormonal days as a coping mechanism. The sweet foods that I eat which are either fast-release carbs or high GI (glycemic index) foods, release glucose into the bloodstream rapidly, causing a spike in blood sugar levels. After a short period of time, all the energy provided by these foods have already been broken down, causing my blood sugar levels to rise which sends the signal to my brain, causing me to become hungry again very quickly. I then end up eating more food than my body needs and get fatter.
I reproduced these systems in the game by making the girl bigger as she "consumes" food items. The food doesn't disappear in my game when she "eats" it because firstly I thought it looked more visually appealing in the game, and secondly it explicitly showcases the items that she has consumed as an addition to her size. She must consume the food items by order (posted on the sticky note on the fridge) because I based this behavior on how my cravings work in real life: I want to enjoy certain foods first before binging the next one.
The other systems I was inspired by were the size-increasing and object-sticking systems in Katamari Damacy. In my game, as the girl rolls and collides with food objects, they stick onto the her and as she collects enough objects within a group, her size increases by x float and the next group of objects is unlocked. If she hasn't collected enough food objects from group 1, she cannot collect the ones from group 2 (bigger food items) because her size is not big enough (as the condition for the script, but the actual reason as to why the girl can't "eat" the next food is different thematically as I've mentioned above). and so on and so forth. The original Katamari system also uses the same size -increasing and object-sticking system. However, their other mechanics and elements are different as they have more obstacles and challenges (e.g. colliding with bigger objects can cause the current objects to fall off and enemies hindering the goal, whereas my game only focused on the aspect of collecting food items in the right order and some platforming.
